Artist Xu Sijin’s work ‘Next’ is a work that connects several participants through constant phone calls or voice messages. With the addition of the first participant’s phone call, she/he and the artist have a two-way contact; and then, according to the participant’s preference, the artist chooses one of her/his friends to make a telephone connection—connected by phone, two dots and a line stretched out from the artist. If participants want, this connection line can extend indefinitely. No one knows who and where the person on the other side of the phone is. However, the curiosity about the identity and social interaction of another person is increasingly restricted by some other factors: the inevitable noise caused by the increase of equipment; the difficulty of mutual communication caused by the increase of the number of people. But these difficulties gave the participants a new experience. When the participants heard the remote and thin unfamiliar sound at the end, it was as astonishing and curious as when they heard the sound coming from the other side when they dialed the phone for the first time. Every word that everyone utters is like a stone thrown into a pond. The ripples collide and break into each other, and disappear before being heard.
